Aaron Goerner writes in a clear, kind, reasoned manner that leaves no doubt as to his motive but which at the same time respects those he interacts with. As Christians in the West come into more and more contact with Muslims who have immigrated to our shores the questions posed in these pages, and answered by Goerner, will more and more be the questions we have to give answer to if we are serious about presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ to our neighbours. You don't need to be a trained theologian to follow the arguments and it would be a great tool for laymen. Very helpful! Highly recommended.Product details

I have no doubt that this book will break down walls of misunderstanding and mistrust that have been up for hundreds of years simply because Muslims and Christians have never completely understood each others views and I believe this book will go a long way in opening up an intelligent and respectful dialogue between these two faiths. As a pastor and author, we can not assume anything but prejudice is eroded by learning to see which each of these faith's followers believe and will result in, not being disagreeable but in at least, agreeing to be agreeable. Well done.
Based on Aaron Goerner's comparative study of Islam and Christianity, his book "Is the Qur'an the Word of God?" deserves this answer "It Cannot Possibly Be So."
In what can easily be a charged debate, Rev. Goerner's manner is as much irenic and pastoral as it is incisive and penetrating. He both approaches and answers his posed question historically, theologically, and scripturally. It has the additional benefit of being approached personally, since he lets the reader in on the actual (but anonymized) correspondence he has had with Muslims.
Some prominent features that stand out to this reviewer are that Rev. Goerner capably
1) provides a corrective to mistaken notions about the Christian Bible, textual history, manuscripts, and the like;
2) presses the inconsistencies surrounding the Qur'an itself or to previous witness and revelation;
3) paints a clear picture of how Christianity, when properly understood, is not only consistent with its own Scripture, but how that Scripture is God's Word over against the Qur'an and despite Muslims' many objections.
4) pinpoints the critical consequences of denying the truths and message of the Christian Bible on such things as the triune being of God, the historical death of Jesus, and how only the Christian Scriptures' God can deal both justly and mercifully with a person;
Rev. Goerner's labors will benefit both Christians and Muslims - indeed any person who honestly wants to know the truth on this important question. The author's question at the outset is Is the Qur'an the Word of God? This reader's conclusion at the end of the book was It cannot possibly be so.
"Is the Qur'an the Word of God?" is an excellent layman's apologetic of Christianity in the face of the growing challenge from Islam. The threat of Islam is expanding in the West. (By this, I refer to its threat as a false religion to steal mens hearts and lead them to eternal destruction, not its danger in terms of culture or public security.) But how is the Christian to respond? With fear or hostility or accommodation, which are the more common responses from Christian and non-Christian alike in our day? No, the Christian response to Islam - to Muslims - is the same as the Christian response to all false notions - the cross of Christ. And that is Aaron Goerner's constant refrain throughout this apologetic in which he repeatedly confronts Muslims with the central Christian teaching of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Rev. Goerner discusses other important areas of difference between Christianity and Islam, including the Islamic denial of a triune God and their claims about the authenticity of their Qur'an while denigrating the Bible, but he demonstrates how the Christian's most important defence and testimony is the message of the death and resurrection of Christ.
Rev. Goerner lets Muslims speak for themselves by publishing excerpts of email conversations he has had with them. And with each challenge to Christianity, he demonstrates the illegitimacy of the Muslim position by his defence of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Even with Muslims who claim to revere and respect Jesus Christ, he shows them that their rejection of the deity of Jesus, and of the death and resurrection of Jesus proves that they are honouring a different Jesus, not the real Jesus of history.
This point actually takes us to the heart of Rev. Goerner's apologetic. The cross of Christ is the central theological message that he keeps driving home, but his strategy is to root this doctrine in history. In this way, he is also teaching modern Christians a crucial lesson in how to think. One of the reasons that the modern Western Church is so weak is that Christians don't know their history and, far worse, they don't care that they don't know. As a result, it's hard to tell if they have genuine faith because they have adopted an approach to religion that emphasizes mysticism and speculation, showing very little interest in theology and history. And such an approach to religion makes it almost impossible to effectively evangelize others. In contrast to this, historical authenticity is Rev. Goerner's foundational argument. (And in this respect, he treats the Bible as real history, repeatedly turning to it to make his historical case against Islam.) He demonstrates that Christianity, not Islam, passes the tests of historical authenticity. He notes that conventional tests of historical authenticity place greater emphasis on the testimony of eyewitnesses than on theories postulated hundreds of years after an event took place. On this and other grounds, Islam denies the best historical evidence and, therefore, demonstrates itself to be a religion of mysticism and speculation. This uncommon (today) approach to defending the faith, and exposing the errors of false religion, is powerful, especially when it is used to persistently bring people back to the cross of Christ - the historical reality of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It leaves Muslims without a defense. At the same time, it is an important tool for educating mystical and speculative Christians on how to think about their own religion. If even half of today's Western Christians were thoroughly committed to the historicity of our faith, the historicity of Scripture, Biblical history and the death and resurrection of Christ, we would still be living in Christendom, not in a dying humanistic society that is drawing Islam into the vacuum that is being left in its wake.
"Is the Qur'an the Word of God?" is not a heavy theological book. As noted previously, it is a layman's apologetic. It is easy to read. Much of the content is real-life email interactions between Rev. Georner and ordinary Muslims. While laying out logical, theological arguments, the book is also compelling and exortational and Rev. Goerner expresses the heart of the pastor and the evangelist in his repeated pleas to Muslims to consider the truth of Christianity and to embrace Christ. I completed the entire book in a single day of dedicated reading. If you want a book that will build up your faith while also giving you valuable tools to speak with the Muslims who live around you, then you need to get this book.
Also still reading slowly, but steadily this is a lot of information to take in and digest. But so far an interesting read.
